"Step
9: Integrate Your Work and Your Life"
The
Pressure Cooker
The most important way to
find and keep balance in your life is to be able to deal effectively
with the emotional issues that come up all the time. One persistent
source of emotional issues for people today is the tension, concern,
worry or anger that they feel as they realize they're facing a change
in their relationship to work.
These emotional issues
are expressions of natural human responses the same ones we all
have when we're afraid or frustrated. They're caused by the
fact that we're surrounded by a swirling sea of contradictory demands
as the old employment social contract everything we thought we
knew about jobs and employment is being transformed in the molecular
marketplace:
- you're worried about
the future of your job;
- you want to get or hold
a job for security, but full-time positions are going away;
- you worked hard to get
an education, but you still don't have the experience to work
in the field you desire;
- your ideal job requires
that you move to a place you hate;
- you work hard to get
a position with a good company, only to find that the company has
been taken over by another firm;
- you've sacrificed
to meet the minimum standards for your chosen livelihood, only to
find there are no opportunities available;
- you consciously sought
out new opportunities to expand your skills, only to have someone
question whether you're able to hold a steady job;
- you've settled for
a job that isn't ideal but works for you, and then find you're
at risk of being displaced by someone else;
- you really just hate
your job (or your boss).
Of course, emotional issues
also arise from pressures and contradictions that develop in other areas
of your life besides work. Causes of emotional issues can include relationships,
health, concerns about other people, the environment, the state of the
world, and on and on. . . .
